Two chronic motor training paradigms differentially influence acute instrumental learning in spinally transected rats.
The effect of two chronic motor training paradigms on the ability of the lumbar spinal cord to perform an acute instrumental learning task was examined in neonatally (postnatal day 5; P5) spinal cord transected (i.e., spinal) rats. At approximately P30, rats began either unipedal hindlimb stand training (Stand-Tr; 20-25min/day, 5days/week), or bipedal hindlimb step training (Step-Tr; 20min/day;...
متن کاملMan with Abdominal Distension
CASE A 63-year-old man presented with abdominal distension and shortness of breath for two days. He reported flatus and denied chest pain, anorexia, vomiting, or abdominal pain. Surgical history was notable for left hepatectomy, cholecystectomy and choledochojejunostomy with a Rouxen-Y. He was afebrile with a pulse in the 100s, blood pressure of 130/60, respiratory rate of 34, and oxygen satura...
متن کاملExternal urethral sphincter motor unit recruitment patterns during micturition in the spinally intact and transected adult rat.
In the rat, external urethral sphincter (EUS) activation during micturition consists of three sequential phases: 1) an increase in tonic EUS activity during passive filling and active contraction of the bladder (guarding reflex), 2) synchronized phasic activity (EUS bursting) associated with voiding, and 3) sustained tonic EUS activity that persists after bladder contraction. These phases are p...
متن کاملAcute abdominal distension secondary to urinary retention in a patient after alcohol withdrawal.
Several cases of alcohol-induced bladder dysfunction have been reported previously, but the mechanism of its development is varied and unclear. We report a case of symptomatic abdominal distension due to urinary retention after alcohol withdrawal. The timing of the onset suggests that it was induced by alcohol withdrawal.
